Is SAP an appropriate answer for church accounting software?
SAP is considered the most powerfule ERP application in the world nowadays. The biggest advantages of SAP is the idea of integration. It integrates all the company functions together such as financial, material movement, human resources or production planning (for manufacturing type of business).
I would say now most of global organizations or multinational organizations expereinces SAP before. Many still use it but some cannot bear with SAP so they come back to the more normal one. SAP can be customized to all types of business from manufacturing to service and from education to entertainment.
So, what about church? Can we use the SAP as a church accounting software?
I would say definitely yes.
If such a complicate business like oil business can use SAP, why can't church use it? In term of functionality, it can generally apply to all type of business as I already mentioned but there are many more to concern when you choose church accounting software from the business owner point of view. One of the most important factor you should think of is that SAP is also one of the most expensive application out there.
Generally, if you want the best product, you have to pay more. Not only the application price itself, you also need to pay for customization and implementation to align it with your business. But once it's in shape, you should be surely gain maximum benefit out of it.
What you have to think about is the return of investment. You should ask consultant clearly in term of financial. Even though it cannot be precise, it will give you a good idea whether you want to take a risk with SAP or not. You should think whether your organization or your church is complicate enough for SAP?
Imagine you buy a simulation waterfall to put in the front yard of your house. It will be beautiful if your frontyard is big enough but it will look ridiculous if it's not. Moreover, if you don't have enough time and money to maintain your waterfall, it will leave you a dirty looking piece of huge rock and will screw up the image of your whole house. Same apply to ERP, if you don't have enough resource to maintain it, do not choose the a huge waterfall.
Choosing ERP for your organization is a long term solution. It requires so much effort to change.
